What is the market-wide margin maintenance ratio?
The margin maintenance ratio measures how much cushion the market value of margin-bought stock holds over the loans behind it. At the market level, the total market value of TWSE margin-bought stock is divided by the total margin balance, giving a read on the pressure facing leveraged money: a falling ratio means margin traders' holdings are shrinking and forced-selling pressure is building; a rebound means the pressure is easing.
What does the 130% margin-call threshold mean?
When an individual account's collateral maintenance ratio falls below 130%, the broker issues a margin call; failing to top up in time triggers forced liquidation. 130% is the statutory threshold for an individual account — the market-wide aggregate is for tracking trends and relative levels, and approaching 130% does not mean market-wide forced liquidation.
