FAQ
- What is altcoin season?
- A period when money rotates from Bitcoin into altcoins and most alts outperform BTC. Historically it tends to follow a Bitcoin-led rally, after BTC dominance peaks and rolls over.
- How is the Altcoin Season Index calculated?
- Take the top 100 coins by market cap (excluding stablecoins and wrapped tokens) and measure the share whose 90-day return beats Bitcoin. Above 75 is altcoin season, below 25 is Bitcoin season, in between is the transition zone. Values before 2026-08-11 are backfilled estimates computed from the current constituent set.
- How does BTC dominance relate to altcoin season?
- BTC dominance (BTC.D) is Bitcoin's share of total crypto market cap. Falling dominance usually means money is moving into altcoins, in the same direction as a rising index — read together, they cross-check whether rotation is real.
- Should I buy altcoins once the index says altcoin season?
- The index describes market state, not a trading signal. Even in altcoin season, sector performance varies widely — check sector money flow to see where capital is actually going before acting.
