This Week 2026-09-29
Week to 09/29: Leveraged Funds longs +680, shorts −4.28K BTC, net short 35.4K BTC (percentile 82 of the past year); Asset Managers longs +573, shorts −1.56K BTC, net long 18.1K BTC (percentile 29 of the past year).
Leveraged funds added both longs and shorts, which looks more like a basis trade (buying spot or ETFs while selling futures) and is not the same as a bet on a fall. CFTC classifies traders by type, not by the purpose of a trade, and its definition of leveraged funds itself includes arbitrage strategies. CFTC classification notes

Leveraged Funds and Asset Managers Net Position
Net position = longs − shorts, in BTC. The price line uses the right axis: Binance spot BTCUSDT, UTC daily close on the report date (Tuesday).
Who Are the Four Trader Groups?
- Asset Managers: pension funds, endowments, insurance companies, mutual funds and other institutional investors.
- Leveraged Funds: hedge funds, CTAs and the like; strategies may be directional positions or arbitrage.
- Dealers: large banks and dealers in securities, swaps and other derivatives. The group reflects their role, not a short position.
- Other Reportables: corporate treasuries, central banks, smaller banks and the like, mostly hedging with futures.

What Is the COT Report?
The Commitments of Traders (COT) report is a weekly futures positioning release from the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). It splits open interest in CME Bitcoin futures into long and short positions by trader type. The data reflects positions as of Tuesday and is generally published on Friday at 3:30 p.m. US Eastern Time.
Does a Leveraged-Fund Net Short Mean a Bet on a Fall?
Not necessarily. CFTC classifies traders by type, not by the purpose of each trade. A leveraged fund's shorts may be a directional bet or part of a basis trade: buying spot or ETFs while selling futures to earn the gap between them. The COT report cannot tell the two apart; longs and shorts rising together is a hint that points more toward arbitrage.
What Do the Percentile and Extreme Zone Mean?
The percentile ranks this week's net position among the latest 52 weekly reports: 90 means it is more long than nine in ten weeks of the past year. At or above 90, or at or below 10, is marked as the extreme zone. That only says the position is high or low against the past year; it does not mean a reversal is coming and gives no timing.
Why Does the Combined (Coins) Line Have a Break?
The first COT data for Micro Bitcoin futures is 2021-05-04. Before that, the combined line holds the standard contract only; in the week the micro contract joins, the total steps up once and that week's change includes the micro contract's whole first position. The chart marks it with a dashed line.
